I went on a long walk yesterday morning after waking up too early. I took my camera. I won’t say I got any striking pictures but I’m glad I now have a document for myself of my regular running route to Rondebosch common (obviously I can’t carry a camera when running).

I’m trying to put a couple of concepts together this year. I have had some luck in increasing the consistency with which I engage in activities by documenting them in a very simple, binary way. Did I or didn’t I on a given day - no details of duration or quality need be captured.

So now I’m putting that together with the fact that I’m a total generalist. I have no overwhelming obsession that leads to swift mastery. So the only way to gain something close to mastery over any of my very many interests is to practice them all with regularity.

So for the first time this year I’m listing the lot and noting whether or not I practice each one. Some I hope to do daily - such as deliberately photographing at least once (this wouldn’t include for example grabbing a phone pic of one of the cats doing something funny to show friends but could include a phone pic where I’m exercising my photographic skills in some ways)

By doing this I hope to make at least measurable progress on a broad front by the year’s end. I’m not going to beat myself up if some things fall by the wayside or even if I go through periods of neglecting the documentation. The idea will simply be to take it up again when I can and not to make it stressful.

In some key areas I’m also hoping to build on my strengths rather than being distracted by the next shiny idea that pops into my noggin - as I so frequently am. So for example on guitar I want to concentrate heavily on surf guitar, blues, and folk fingerpicking no matter how appealing bossa nova may look.

I should probably also get assessed for adhd, lol.
