Dawn impala. I’m trying some new camera settings and they take a bit of getting used to. Quite a bit of noise on this one. Correctible with care. But I didn’t need a very high shutter-speed for this kind of thing.

The Magician. @kanesnaps larking at the back of The Elephant’s Eye - against the mossy retina. It’s a tall, temple-like opening in the mountainside in Silvermine Nature Reserve. The last time I was there, maybe when I was ten or twelve it seemed a Herculean feat to get there. Kane and I found it such a quick and gentle saunter that we went on to the Hout Bay overlook - which seldom disappoints.
Our host, Jean, was a character out of a story-book from the 1950s. A Belgian who took to the sea at fourteen to work as a ship’s cook and saw many things - including over-eager young Poles cutting their fingers off and the preparation of seagull in secret to offset a meat shortage. He was a restauranteur for a spell and then a cooking teacher. He just so happened to teach me how to make an easy chicken stock. ...
