I ran a roll of colour negative film through the F100 mainly to check if it was leaving tramlines on the film as this camera has sometimes done. It passed the test so I’m loading up the queen of all colour films, Fujichrome Velvia 50 which, know it or not, you saw splashed across magazines throughout the 90s.

I found this precious roll in the fridge (expired 2009) and, since I’ve discovered there’s a place processing slide film in Cape Town, wanted to shoot it on the F100. The F100 came out in 1999 and can use Nikon’s most recent F-mount lenses, including those with image stabilisation for maximum sharpness - especially with a very slow, 50ISO film like this. A lot of young people may only think of film for producing images with character. But Velvia can theoretically out-resolve the highest resolution full-frame digital cameras and produce wild colour.

My old beast. Loaded up with a roll of ancient Fujicolor Superia 100 for the first time in more than ten years. This was the first camera I actually bought rather than got as a hand-me-down. I hauled this heavy thing and 30 rolls of film around South and Southeast Asia in 2005 - well inside the digital era but before digital was good.

I’ve discovered a few rolls of Velvia 50 and this is the perfect camera to shoot them on. But I need to first see if I’ve sorted the issue where the pressure plate was leaving tramlines down the film.

I was with my dad while he got his prescription filled at Noyes Pharmacy in Kenilworth which still amazingly has a film autolab. You can see the diamond grid where they once had many brands and types of 35mm film for sale and now there’s just one - and only about a dozen in stock plus some disposable cameras.

They used to have a collection of vintage Leicas - MIII’s through M6s I think. Maybe 20 or so. Not even for sale. I believe the old owner sold them quickly when digital moved in - not realising like most of us that their value would recover in time I think.

I’ve been taken with a real hankering to use my Pentax 645 again. Such a great camera. This was in 2012 at the little airport outside Beaufort West that was a bnb at the time. Hence @withoutaleaf hanging out on the air traffic control tower. When we were next there a couple years ago the runway was in action again training Chinese pilots for their indentured servitude in China’s commercial aviation industry. Worse jobs to be enslaved to, I guess.

Throwback to winter 2017, photographing @johnthevudio photographing me. We went to photograph a storm kicking foam and spray up against the Seapoint sea wall. Fun using my Mamiya C220. Maybe one day I’ll even develop the film.

#tbt It couldn’t have been more obvious that ‘bar mooda’ was a front for organised crime. Expensive décor. No one in it. The police did nothing for reasons that are easy to guess. It took the staff being tied up and the place being firebombed to finally drive this particular blight from Observatory. This was taken on the morning of the firebombing.

Hers ’n his. All ready to roll. Two of the most elegant cameras to emerge from the genius of 20th C Japanese engineering. On the right is my Pentax MX, available from 1976 - my birth year - which I’ve used since 1993 and has been all over the world with me. On the left the Olympus OM4 which came out in 1983. It’s an electronic marvel compared to the all mechanical MX. I got it for @withoutaleaf to document #setlife .
